Dear Colleagues,
The AIC International Crystallography School 2021 (AICS2021), entitled “Fundamentals of Crystallography: the theory behind the crystal structure solution” will be held online from August 31st to September 4th. The School is organized by the Commission on Crystallographic Teaching of the Italian Crystallographic Association (AIC) as a satellite event of the XLIX Meeting of the Association (hybrid organization: online 6th-8th Sept and on site on 9th Sept in Parma).
Confirmed lecturers are: Gervais Chapuis (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, CH), Regine Herbst Irmer (University of Gottingen, D), Massimo Nespolo (Universitè de Lorraine, FR), Lukas Palatinus (Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, CZ), Isabel Uson (Institute de Biologia Molecular de Barcelona, SP).
This year AICS2021 is about fundamentals of crystallography, covering the mathematical and theoretical aspects behind the crystal structure solution and refinement both for small molecules and macromolecules. The school is addressed to PhD students and researchers working in Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Material Science, Biological Macromolecules, wishing to exploit crystallographic techniques in their research for the first time or for those who already use crystallography and want to deepen basic theoretical aspects. Several topics will be discussed: from symmetry to reciprocal/real space, from diffraction theory to the math behind the structural solution.
Since the understanding of the mathematical concepts heavily depends on the background of the attendees, on day 0 (31st August) we scheduled a half-a-day pre-course dedicated to the mathematical refresh to level the class background out.
The school will be organized with lectures in the morning sessions and interactive classes in the afternoon, where students, grouped in small virtual rooms and guided by tutors, will have hands-on practicals.

The registration fee (50€) includes the participation to the event hosted on a dedicated online platform and all the materials provided beforehand. Due to the interactive classes constrains, the number of students accepted to attend the school might be limited. The deadline for the registration is 25th July. Successful applicants will be notified by 31st July. Payments must be completed by August 6th.
